Shin splints is extremely painful condition endured by someone on his or her shin and lower leg. It is commonly triggered by prolonged running, typically on hard plains and irregularly shaped surfaces.

Aside from MTSS, the pain on the shin may be caused by the following:

  • Stress fracture
  • Compartment syndrome

Shin pain is assessed and treated frequently at Hunter Podiatry Services. Each of our podiatrists is qualified and skilled in gait analysis, and in taking care of foot health and lower limb conditions. To ascertain a diagnosis, we perform a thorough examination which may involve looking at the patient¹s history, checking the palpation, and checking whether walking and running exercises are needed. Should further image testing, such as ultrasound, x-ray, MRI be needed, the podiatrist can provide a referral. When all these avenues have been explored, your podiatrist will then implement a plan to control pain, and help you get back to your functional activity as soon as possible.
